What are the advantages of steamed hay?
In recent years, the topic of coughing and hay steaming has become more and more topical. There are an increasing number of horses suffering from illnesses such as allergies, chronic coughing, equine asthma or COPD. The triggers for the symptoms are often dust, mold and fungal spores found in the hay. Even high-quality hay always contains a certain amount of dust, mold and fungal spores. Once the horse’s lungs have come into contact with it and developed a defense mechanism in the form of coughing, a „memory effect“ is formed, so that from then on the horses react to even the smallest amounts of dust, mold or fungal spores. Then steaming hay is THE effective solution, as almost 100% of the unwanted foreign substances are destroyed.
Unlike when watering hay, however, the valuable nutrients in the hay are not lost when steaming because they are not washed out. But it is not only sick horses that should be given steamed hay: healthy horses also benefit from steamed hay.
Because dust, mold and fungal spores can reduce performance and damage the lungs in the long term, even if the horse is not yet showing any symptoms!
The new mobile Summerwind hay steamer is the next generation of hay steamers: Compared to the normal hay steamer, the Summerwind hay steamer is also a transport cart. This saves a lot of time and annoying loading and unloading, as the hay is steamed directly in the transport cart and then transported to the horse in it. The hay steamer can be filled with loose hay, hay nets or palms as desired. The steaming time is set using a timer.
Once the steaming process is complete, the device switches itself off. The hay can then be fed immediately as soon as it has cooled down a little. The required time for steaming can be reduced to a minimum thanks to this simple operation.
How do I use the hay steamer?
The hay is simply filled into the container loosely, in a net or as a rib or palm. You then enter the desired steaming time using the timer. Once this has elapsed, the device switches itself off. The hay can then be fed directly. Thanks to this simple operation, we were able to reduce the additional time required to a minimum.
How is the hay steamer constructed?
Completey of stainless steel! This material is absolutely hygienic, easy to clean und long lasting. Heat and humidity will not effect stainless steel. This differs the summerwind hay steamers from other brands, that build their hay steamer mainly of plastic.
The integrated water container must be filled up around once a week, depending on how often it is used. A normal water hose is connected to the cart for this purpose. The water tank on the underside of the steamer has a capacity of 40l / 30l / 25l (varies depending on the model), which is filled using a hose connection. You can read the current water level using a water level indicator. If the water level is too low, the device switches itself off. Heating coils on the underside of the cart evaporate the water as soon as the device is switched on. Slots that run along the floor direct the steam into the interior of the cart. Depending on the setting and duration of the steaming, the hay is only moistened or made germ-free at around 90 degrees. We offer our hay steamers with either normal current or high voltage. 230 V is usually sufficient. For the large model, however, we recommend a 9KW connection, as this can reduce the steaming time by around 50%. For hay steamers in sizes S and M, a normal power connection is usually completely sufficient.
